The Jane James Used Tack Shop (and Free Store)
The Jane James Used Tack Shop is a social enterprise initiative of the Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association (CTRA). Like most charities, CTRA relies on external funding sources to keep our services accessible for persons in need. The tack store project enables CTRA to sell donated used horse equipment and riding apparel in order to self-generate part of the revenue required to sustain our services. This innovative fundraiser enables CTRA to successfully leverage community support and provide a much-needed used tack retail service for local horse owners and riders.
The Jane James Tack Store opened in 2011. In 2016 the store was selected as a winner of the seCatalyst awards - an Island-wide Dragon's Den style competition recognizing exceptional social enterprises. The tack store is located on-site at the CTRA facility on Providence Farm.
Donations to the Jane James Used Tack Shop
Every year, CTRA gratefully receives thousands of dollars in donated horse equipment and riding clothing. Unless specified, donations of tack and apparel to the program are sorted by staff/volunteers and designated to be:
a) used directly by the program,
b) sold in the used tack store, or
c) re-distributed in the community via the "free store"
Donation Drop-Off: during store hours (see below). Please don't drop-and-run as we would like to take the time to say thank you and get the information we need to provide you with a tax receipt (if applicable). If you have to drop-off outside of hours, please arrange this in advance (so we/farm security know to expect you). In some cases, we can arrange volunteer pick-up if you are not able to make the trip to the farm.
